Too Good for Fashion Week? Wednesday, Apr 2 2008

Heatherette decided to make a few sacrifices this year and New York Fashion Week was one of them. Everyone was wondering where the dynamic duo was during this year Fashion Week, turns out Heatherette’s Traver Rains and Richie Rich were busy creating their newest makeup line for M.A.C. cosmetics. Rains was especially busy himself recording his debut album.

When asked why there were not in attendance at Fashion Week, Rains said he and Rich were not exactly thrilled with the time slots. Rains also mentioned that the two had never really gone with the grain and that they had always paved their own way and not being a part of Fashion Week was all in the same.

Some of the world’s best fashion designers are asked to be a part of New York Fashion Week and the world’s glitterati is sitting front row waiting to buy the designs. That being said, it seems like a snub to Fern Malice, the woman behind New York Fashion Week, and the rest of the fashion world as a whole. It seems that Heatherette’s attempt to go against the grain is really just shutting doors rather than opening them.

The Mob is polluting the Upper East Side Wednesday, Mar 26 2008

Seventh Avenue has yet to rid itself of the Mafia as Lewis Kasman was recently brought up on charges ranging from racketeering to money laundering. As most of the old school mobsters had small delicatessens or restaurants as fronts, Kasman had the fashion industry for the infamous Gambino family. Apparently dirty money has been running through the fashion industry for years without many people knowing. Kasman, who claims to be the son John Gotti never had, has been running the family underground because the Feds had all thought they had caught the last remaining members of the family in 2004. It will be interesting to see how Kasman can fight his way out of this one.

Sex and The City: The Movie Wednesday, Mar 26 2008

The fashionista Manhanittes are coming to the silver screen! The rumors of a movie have been stirring since the finale of the show and I am happy to say that the cast of Sex and the City are back! The movie is based on Sarah Jessica Parker’s character, Carrie, finally getting married to her longtime on-and-off boyfriend on the show, Mr. Big (played by Chris Noth). The previews have led everyone to believe that they might not end up together, all I can say is that I, personally, will be up, front and center of the movie theatre to find out!

Besides Carrie, the movie will feature all of the show’s usual characters including Charlotte (played by Kristen Davis), Samantha (played by Kim Catrall) and Miranda (played by Cynthia Nixon) and the rest of the Carrie’s Upper East Side posse. The movie will hit theatres on May 30th and it will sure to bring in enormous crowds.

Controversy on the Cover Wednesday, Mar 26 2008

LeBron James, NBA basketball player for the Cleveland Cavaliers, has graced the cover of Vogue as the first African American man on the magazine. James posed with Brazilian model, Gisele Bunchen for this April’s issue. I think this shoot is a monumental step for black men getting their names out in the fashion world, others, however, haven’t exactly taken so lightly to this. The Chicago Tribune has recently published an article about how offended some black journalists are. According to Jemele Hill, a columnist for ESPN.com, this shoot was ”memorable for all the wrong reasons.” Apparently James is in a “King Kong” pose and he looks aggressive.

Speaking as a Hispanic woman, I would be thrilled to see someone like Carlos Ponce (a well-known Cuban singer, now the host of VH1’s Viva! Hollywood) on the cover of American Vogue even if he were sporting a Mexican sombrero and a poncho. I really think that this is a huge step for African American men in the fashion world. I think that people need to realize that this is just a stepping stone into something greater. We will definitely begin to see more brown, beautiful bodies on the covers of magazines – it’s just a matter of time.

Whatta Yellow Rat Bastard! Wednesday, Mar 19 2008

Yellow Rat Bastard, Greenwich Village’s sneaker paradise is in hot water. The company’s employees are suing the company because they are being paid well under what the state’s minimum wage is at. The more complaining the employees did, the more hours would be cut from their schedules.

Ironic that the very same people who once stuck it to the man are now having it stuck to them. Hopefully, the scuffle can be settled soon but it would really be a shame to watch my highschool hangout be taken down.

Cut it out! Wednesday, Mar 19 2008

Flipping through the channels the other day, I came across VH1’s Rock of Love, a show dedicated to finding true love for former Poison frontman, Bret Michaels. As the show ran its course, the man of the hour took out two of the remaining contestants out for a day on the town. After drinks and dinner at some fashionable spot in Los Angeles, Michaels took the two ladies to an Ed Hardy boutique. As imagined, the prices were astronomical but what was particularly shocking was what was done to the clothes purchased. A man at the boutique took a scissor to the ladies’ t-shirts and completely tore them to shreds. Assuming that the party of three would be completely appalled, I anxiously awaited their response. As Hollywood goes, I shouldn’t have been surprised to see that they were elated with the man’s creation. Apparently, cut up Ed Hardy t-shirts are the latest craze.

So next time you accidentally tear your shirt, take a scissor to it – guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser!

How much is that Donatella in the window? Wednesday, Mar 19 2008

From Macy’s over the top Christmas windows to the decadent displays of Saks Fifth Avenue; the streets of Manhattan always seems to be glittering with beautiful window displays. But how far is too far for the capital city of the world? The fashion designer/icon, Donatella Versace posed inside a Barney’s New York window display to promote her most recent Men’s line. Donatella, as always, brought in enormous crowds just to watch her pose as a mannequin for her own line. Considering her waxy complexion and her endless list of plastic surgeries, one can only wonder how aestetically pleasing she must have been to all her famous entourage of onlookers. Luckily after the circus show was over, she hosted a party (with a guest list ranging from Busta Rhymes to Woody Allen) that made up for all the staring and glorifying of the designer.

Is it Really Making a Difference? Tuesday, Mar 4 2008

The act of putting on makeup has become such drudgery; just another mundane part of the morning rush out the door. Do we ever stop to think of the effects of the products we so faithfully apply to our faces on a daily basis? Do these products even work? The Washington Post Fashion editors have set out for the ultimate quest – the search for beauty products that actually work the way they should. From detanglers for those knotty-headed toddlers to rouge that doubles as a lip gloss – these writers have seemed to cover it all (even a moisturizing aftershave for the men!). This test drive features 15 different products retailing at $11.95 all the way up to $70.

Younger and younger, women are beginning to become members of the Cold Cream Club, convinced that they are developing wrinkles and turn to these age-old products as a remedy. Even though there are a few effective products out on the market and going under the knife is always an option – we, as women, need to realize that we are all totally and uniquely beautiful. The wrinkles and scars are what make our faces beautiful, so let’s use the makeup as enhancers instead of cover-up!

Who will get the Auf wiedersehen? Tuesday, Mar 4 2008

As Bravo’s Project Runway’s Season 4Finale is quickly approaching us, the question on everyone’s minds is Who will win it all? Now down to the final three contestants, everyone is anxiously anticipating the end.

Will it be the competition’s youngest contestant, Annapolis native Christian, whose feirce haute couture designs seem to wow the judges week by week?

Or will it be Rami, whose meticulous draping dazzled the judges at the beginning of the competition but began to bore them after his repetitive attempts.

Or will it be Jillian, whose constant struggle with the clock never seems to affect her immaculate and complex designs.

After last week’s sneak peek of the designers’ collections for the finale, I must say that all the collections are looking bleak. Christian’s pieces seem to have come right out of circus costume closet, Rami’s pieces (as per usual) are fit for the 46 year old divorcee and Jillian’s looks feature absolutely no color. Hopefully the designers took of some of Tim Gunn’s advice and edited their work because there was definitely a ton of fashion faux pas in the bunch.

To watch the Project Runway Season 4 Finale, watch Bravo tomorrow night at 10pm.

Auf Wiedersehen!

Lohan Has the Seven Year Itch Wednesday, Feb 27 2008

At 21 years old, Lindsay Lohan is replicating a photo shoot that Marilyn Monroe did when she was 36 years old. Bert Stern, the photographer responsible for both stars’ shoots, said he was completely enraptured and intrigued by Lohan. He had always felt that there was a lot more depth to her than what the media portrays. Stern was also fascinated by Monroe, who was always surrounded by paparazzi and whose life was always filled with scandal.

Although Lohan admits, in an article for New York Magazine, that she is very much a fan of Marilyn Monroe it may not be entirely appropriate for her to replicate her photo shoot. At 36, months after this shoot was shot and after three failed marriages, Monroe was found dead in her Los Angeles apartment due to an overdose. Given Lohan’s drug addiction history, the world feels like there is an eerie resemblance in both women and their history. Lohan was also widely criticized for looking so much older than her ripe 21 years.

Personally, I feel Stern got the best of Lohan and picked her to do this shoot knowing that there was a morbid resemblance between both women. Hopefully Lohan is truly rehabilitated from all of her issues and will be able to overcome her past.
